Product Description
Vegetable Baker

Amazon.com Review
For centuries food has been cooked in earthenware pots over open fires or in brick ovens. Roemertopf carries on this tradition by crafting clay pots and dishes specifically intended for cooking a variety of vegetables, meats, casseroles, and breads in the home oven. Manufactured in Mexico, each vessel is made from unglazed and porous terra cotta containing no lead or cadmium. Before each use, the pot is soaked in water in order to absorb a certain amount of moisture into the permeable clay. This moisture is slowly released during cooking, sealing in the natural juices and increasing the flavor and tenderness.

Covered in a bounty of sculpted vegetables, and with a built-in handle, the Roemertopf vegetable baker can be used to prepare a quick and easy side dish of seasonal vegetables or a casserole for a family of four. Measuring 8 by 12 inches, the baker can go straight from the oven to the table and can be used as a serving dish. While the pot can be used in both the oven and microwave, it is intended to be used primarily in the oven. Due to their porous and unglazed nature, the pots should not be exposed to extreme temperature changes, and Roemertopf recommends washing all clay pots by hand. --Lea Werbel

The first one I received has some cracked parts, but Amazon replaced it quickly. The second one was in good condition and I've used it several times now.

I have several stoneware baking dishes, however all of them are too large for making a meal for two, so I was looking for a smaller unit. The Reco International Vegetable Baker is PERFECT. It fits exactly into my toaster oven, and with 10 minutes' preparation and 50 minutes in the oven, a most delectable meal for two, including grains and veggies, is ready for our enjoyment. The baker is easy to clean and to handle, and I am delighted.

5 out of 5 stars The only way to bake.   March 11, 2007

I had been used to cooking with clay pots many years ago. But, after several moves, my pots had become pot shards. I have many food allergies and have my own large personal garden to help me avoid the contaminants normally found in non-organics and I love fresh veggies, raw or baked. So, in keeping with my resolution to start eating better and healthier without sacrificing quality of taste, I decided to replenish my clay pots and I had this brand of pot in the past and was well satisfied then. I bought the veggie pot and the chicken roaster. The veggie pot was used the night I received it and what a joy it was to taste the meal prepared in it. Onion, potatoe, broccoli, turnip, carrots, green beans, fresh sweet red pepper slices, mushrooms and whole bulbs of garlic mixed with a little olive oil, thyme, rosemary and fresh sage, salt and pepper at 425 for 35 minutes. Yummy---add some steamed brown rice to the meal, not in the pot, and you are in for a nutritious and delicious meal with taste that will make the clay pot a standard vessel for your cooking. The chicken pot was used a day or two later for friends who raved about the taste. Clay is the only way to go as far as I'm concerned.
