Product Description

Dr. Nancy Kay has one wish for today’s tail-wagging population—that attached by a leash to every dog is a motivated and effective human advocate.

She admits motivation is the easy part, as most people really want to provide their dogs with the best health care. But making good medical decisions for your dog can be difficult and challenging.

As a dog lover you are confronted with health-care decision-making on many levels: Which veterinarian is the right one for me and my dog? Which vaccinations does my dog need? Is it time to get a second opinion? Where do I get one? How much is this going to cost? Is there a more economical option? Is this medication necessary? Is my dog ready to say goodbye? Am I ready to let him go?

And then there are the myriad symptoms your pup might experience— the lumps and limps and sneezes and appetite changes that make you wonder:

Is that normal? Should I take my dog to the vet immediately? Should I wait and see if he’s better tomorrow?

When dealing with these questions, you may feel alone and ill-prepared, desperate for a knowledgeable source to gently explain what your options really are, and how to determine which best serves the needs of your canine and human families. Luckily, you’ve come to the right place!

In Speaking for Spot, Dr. Kay provides an insider’s guide to navigating the overwhelming, confusing, and expensive world of veterinary medicine with a warmth, candor, and humor cultivated over 20-plus years of working with canine patients and their human companions. She explains the vet’s point of view, and how to initiate and nurture a healthy relationship with a vet and her staff. She leads a guided tour through a modern veterinary land comprised of high-tech scanning devices, advanced surgery, physical rehabilitation, and more—the kinds of amazing medical procedures you expect to find in a human hospital, but may not have known were available for your four-legged friends.

Dr. Kay helps you come to grips with a cancer diagnosis, and explains the tough choices that are bound to follow. Plus, you’ll find an alphabetical listing of the most common symptoms experienced by dogs and the questions your vet is sure to ask when you report them—not to mention hundreds of prevalent diseases and related points you should be certain to clarify before leaving your vet’s office with a treatment plan in hand.

The result is everything you need to know in one fabulous, fully illustrated book. You will not find a more thorough, in-depth guide to ensuring high-quality treatment for your dog.

I purchased 10 copies of Speaking for Spot and went back for more!
I sent the book to everyone I know that has a dog. The book was sent to Florida, Penna, Wyo, etc... all over the US. I have received a huge thank you from everyone I sent it to. My cousin took the book to her Vet in Jackson Hole, WY. The Vet was so impressed that she said that she was going to recommend it to her clients. Speaking for Spot is the Best all around manual for the serious pet owner full of great info and tips on situations faced by anyone who has dogs and cats!

As one vet to another, thank you Dr. Kay! You have made my life extraordinarily easier and I've no doubt that your book is bettering the lives of animals and their owners everywhere. Several of my clients have now read Speaking for Spot and I must tell you- they are leaps and bounds ahead when it comes to talking with me about their pets' (dogs and cats) health. I've noticed that they ask excellent questions, provide thorough medical histories, and their decision-making processes seem much easier for them. I would love to make Speaking for Spot mandatory reading for all of my clients. Not only is the material in this book good for them, it is good for their pets and for me as well.

What an amazing help to all who own animals. The thoughtfulness shared throughout this book is how we should help our animals when they are sick and need our help. It is hard to be brave and make the right choice for your dog - Nancy helps you with the decision.

Thank you Dr. Kay and Speaking for Spot! For years I've been debating whether or not to get health insurance for my dogs and cats. At last, some objective, thorough guidance on this topic! Not only did you walk me through the steps to figure out whether or not insurance was right for me and my pets (it is), you provided me with all the questions necessary to help me figure out which insurance provider to choose. Thanks to you, my pets are all now insured and I have so much more peace of mind about this previously confusing issue. Dr. Kay, you have truly helped me solve this problem and I will no longer spend time worrying about health insurance for my pets. I LOVE this book! Anyone and everyone who loves and cares for a dog or cat will want to have this book on hand.

5 out of 5 stars If you love dogs, buy this book   December 11, 2008

Buy this book if you love your dog (or horse or cat or rabbit or hamster). The examples are dog specific, but the foundation of these examples apply to any animal. My dog already has 3 veterinarians, a general practitioner, a holistic vet and a nutrition response specialist. I consider the book Speaking for Spot, his 4th veterinarian.
I understand what my vet is telling me at the appointment, but when I get home and try to recall what he/she said, I do not remember. Instead, I recall what I heard him/her to say. Now with prepared questions I will feel much more like an "advocate" for my dog's health.
There are chapters in the book I hope I never need to reference, but it is wonderful knowing they are there, and that I can be better prepared if I need them.
When I finished reading Speaking for Spot, I looked to see what other books Dr. Kay had written, I was ready to order them.
