I read this book for the first time when I was 15 and found it on the floor of the airport--- I have since read it 3 more times over the last 10 years--- AND I send it to people I know that have alot of time on their hands. It is an EXCELLENT read!

I Loved this book and how it all came together. Winter's attitude made this book.The Coldest Winter Ever is about a girl going through life in the projects. Her father happens to run that area and happens to be a drug boss.She doesnt know exactly what to do when she hears the news that they'll be moving out of "her projects."Theres a part when she must live day by day untill she's introduced to sister souljah. sista souljah is a woman who has alot of knowlege but she has her won problems.Winter does alot of things the you wouldnt approve of but it's all in her best interest.I love hoe she daydreams of midnight. The boo isnt just of a girl chasing a guy its about a girl's family falling apart and her trying to live the lavish way she was raised to live. I love how no matter what race or age you are you can relate to this book. some parts you laugh at others you cray. some characters you hate others you love. I PROMISE YOU BY THE END OF THE BOOK YOU'LL CRY. I was sad it ended

I can't believe that I was only like 12 when I first read this book in 1999, because even at that young age, I felt like I could relate.
I've read tons of street lit, urban fiction, urban erotica -- whatever -- since reading The Coldest Winter Ever; and I've even written my own novel, but I have to say . .. to me, nothing compares to The Coldest Winter Ever.

Unfortunately, I never received this book so I cannot review the item only that the seller did not send the book and never replied to my email inquiry about the status of the delivery. Very disappointing experience.
Good book, worth taking a look, but not for everyone December 12, 2008

I really enjoyed this book. The character development is very good; better than what you find in a lot of novels. Sister Souljah does an excellent job of making the ghetto slang flowing and understandable. It's very hard to incorporate ghetto slang in a book and have it be smooth flowing. I also like how the protagonist of the book, Winter Santiaga, isn't your typical protagonist. Her values are her own and the difference between right and wrong largely depend on gaining and/or keeping wealth. This technically makes her much more of a anti-hero than a protagonist.
All this being said, I would not recommend this book to everyone. Here's why:
The sex scenes are much too graphic for many teenagers. Even though Winter's sex drive is very much a part of who she is, I felt that some parts of the book relied too heavily on this.
I have a concern that many won't be able to disconnect the ghetto life with other parts of African-American lifestyles. What goes on in the ghettos in big cities is only one part of African-American life; many blacks do not relate to that lifestyle.
I still give this book five stars. It deserves that much for effort alone.
