Full of replacements March 12, 2010 David W. Bishop I purchased a similar set a few years ago. My wife broke the small knife and wanted the santuko knife. Was cheaper to buy the set than replace the two knives seperately. Love the knives.
At this price, it's a no brainer March 8, 2010 L. Poirot (Springfield, VA) I am sure you can find many issues with any knife set including this one. They do not look as "cool" and fancy and some of the other Henckels Sets out there like the four star II, five star or Pro S. I would not have given this set 5 stars if I had paid full price for them but for less than $150, I don't think you can find anything of this quality around. The ratio for price paid and quality is to me incredible and I can see those knives last for a very long time. You of course need to take care of them. Honing them often and cleaning them after each use with a dry cloth. But those knives are awsome and what a difference does it make to use good tools...
Don't let the suits fool you! March 6, 2010 PSM (Germany) 0 out of 1 found this review helpful
This review comes from a very recent study in kitchen knives, but nonetheless an American resident of Germany who just heard the "word" when it comes to the competition between Henckels and Wusthof (i.e. Wüsthof) in the global market.
The informed market here has the Henckel Four Star (i.e. "Vier Sterne") knife sets selling a good 30% less than their Wüsthof "equivalent" and not so widely available. In general, Germans only want the best quality for such an investment and have a very negative impression of companies that send production overseas.
This is newly the case with the Zwilling Henckels brand. A good two years ago, Henckels, as opposed to Wüsthof, made such a move. It seems that most, if not all, of their multi-knife sets are actually produced in Spain or, even, China. Having read this in discussions online between professional chefs (do a search for "Henckels versus Wusthof" - the Chowhound discussion is most insightful), I confirmed this today at the local market with a butcher who happened to come from the Solingen area (no joking!). One of the professionals online even mentions seeing a fine line indicating a joint between the blade steel and handle steel on the Henckels. This is, of course, not the case with Wüsthof.
About the only thing corporate businessmen are good for is making a quick buck. They know absolutely nothing of improving product quality as opposed to selling companys' souls to reduce it and cash-in "short-term". Of course, in the case of JBL, for instance, the gravy train is still flowing to this day.
Granted, a final decision would best be left to personal experience, but most of us have not had access to both types prior to making the important decision, and may not find a trip to the local kitchen store worthwhile just to gather a surface judgment.
While most tend to prefer Wüsthof for the grip (with a choice of the same quality between the Grand Prix [II] and Classic), it all depends. I hope that I have at least left you more informed for your decision. Finally, I should note that I have no ultimate incentive to "talk down" the Henckels brand versus the Wüsthof.
I would offer product links, but the Amazon linker is totally dysfunctional.
Great product, easy to use and blade stays sharp! March 3, 2010 KimmieT Zwilling J.A. Henckels Four Star 8-Piece Knife Set with Block
This is one of the nicest sets that I have purchased. We have had ours for over a year now, and My husband and I both love to cook, but I always hated chopping veggies because I could never find a knife that was sharp enough and it almost always took me twice as long to chop than it did my husband. However, with the Zwilling set, each knife has it's own use and does a different job so you can choose which knife is most comfortable for you depending on the task involved: whether it's slicing meat or chopping vegetables, this knife set makes these tasks soo much easier...I think it was well worth the money and it makes things so much easier when you have a large group of people coming over and have LOTS of different foods to prepare!!

Not impressed March 1, 2010 C. GU 0 out of 1 found this review helpful
The knife is heavy in hand. The blade is thicker than I expected. So it is difficult to do the thin slides. If you have small hands like me, you'd better consider Henckels lines.
