Editorial Reviews:

Amazon.com Review
Although steels often are touted as sharpening tools, few actually sharpen knife blades, but they do perform the vital task of realigning, or resetting, edges, which bend when contacting a cutting surface or other hard object. Because this tool's rod contains microcrystalline diamonds bonded with nickel to an oval steel shaft it's hard enough to somewhat sharpen a blade. Using this steel won't replace a professional sharpening job, which proceeds from coarse grinding to ever-finer grinding at tightly controlled angles. However, it will lengthen intervals between sharpenings better than a steel without diamonds because it accomplishes the final task of a professional sharpening, which is polishing the edge with its 600-grit mesh to a fine point.

The rule is that a steel should be at least as long as the knife blade being drawn across it and this steel's 12-inch rod is short for most household knives. Lightweight and durable, the tool has a rugged plastic handle with a hanging hole, can be used for serrated knives as well as straight-edge blades, and also is useful for filing glass, crystal, and china. --Fred Brack

Product Description
The Ultimate Edge 12" Professional Sharpening Steel is a premium grade microcrystalline diamond. It's bonded with nickel to a lightweight shaft that sharpens and realigns at the same time to produce a high-grade cutting edge. No messy oil or water needed. Lightweight and easy to use, the 600-grit diamond mesh also sharpens serrated knives. Dimensions: 12" x 3/4"

Item was as advertised. I used a neighbors for several years prior to finding this on Amazon. Very pleased with its ability to sharpen and hone a knife to a razor sharp edge.

I am writing a review after using this product for a few months now. Despite the self-proclaimed hype about sharpening knives, this steel does not work better than my other one from Wushtof. The only thing I like better about this one is the fact that it is longer 12" (compared to my 10" wushtof). Also, this steel started to rust (yes, rust) at the top end near the plastic cap. Sorry, I wanted to like this but it definitely did not not meet my expectations from the other reviews and the product description.

5 out of 5 stars Should be a terrific sharpener   April 14, 2004

I currently own a sharpener similar to the one above that I bought years ago at a farm fair and they do a terrific job at keeping knives sharp. One thing that is not mentioned, eventually the sharpener needs to be cleaned to keep it working well, all that you need to do is wash it and wipe off the shapener to keep it in top working order

5 out of 5 stars Get this Before Considering a Honing Steel   December 3, 2001

If your knives are dull, chances are you need to sharpen them before you need to hone them. Get a diamond-impregnated steel such as this one. This steel will quickly sharpen your knives. Don't try to sharpen your knives with the honing steels that come with most knive sets or that are popularly available or you'll wreck the honing steel as well as waste a lot of elbow grease. They say to use a steel at least as long as your knife. I don't have any 12" knives, but I like the little extra room for error...
