1 out of 5 stars Terrible   August 25, 2008

I've been listening to the Hannah Swensen series on CDs that I borrowed from a friend. This was my fourth one, and though I never thought Fluke's writing was anything great, I expected her to at least improve with each novel. Instead, she seems to be regressing, as each successive installment becomes more irritating and predictable than the last. For instance:

-- It doesn't take a genius to guess who the killer is since 1) There's only one real suspect presented to readers; and 2) it had to be the "new" character since Fluke obviously doesn't want to get rid of her town regulars.

-- Once again, the townies don't mind that Hannah is butting into their business, asking a bunch of personal questions (about extramarital affairs and such) in a completely unofficial capacity. Why is it that NO ONE tells her to go fly a kite or something? This goes beyond suspension of disbelief and into the realm of the completely ridiculous.

-- Just what the heck is it that Mike and Bill do during their investigation? They must be a couple of bumbling idiots not to solve these crimes before Hannah does. I mean, their paths don't even cross hers during the investigation. How could they not end up interviewing the same people or checking out the same leads?? Again, just ridiculous.

-- How tiresome is the love triangle between Hannah, Mike, and Norman? I can't stand the way it's written as a '50s sitcom, with Hannah holding hands with both of them while watching fireworks or engaging in internal debates about whether it's better to be with someone who makes her swoon (Mike) or someone who makes her feel good about herself (Norman). Who cares?????

-- The switched pants joke was telegraphed right from the beginning, and the slow, laborious buildup to the payoff was positively eyeroll inducing. All that diet talk was simply annoying. Plus, there's no way people would be telling Hannah that she looks as though she lost weight just after two or three days. In order to lose one pound of fat, she would have to consumer 3500 fewer calories than she burns off, and would have to lose between 3-5 to make it noticeable. You're telling me this happened in 2 days?? Riiiight. (Normally I wouldn't nitpick about such a stupid detail, but Fluke insisted on pounding in the diet aspect so much that I couldn't let this go without comment.)

----------

The bottom line is that the Swensen series isn't worth wasting time with, even as far as cozy mysteries go. Are these things self-published? That's about the only excuse I can come up with as to why there are 10 books in the series, with the most recent one coming out in Feb. 2008. Who would pay for this junk???

Good series of books so far. Also, great recipes. They are a fast and light read.

4 out of 5 stars Lemon Meringue another winner   May 25, 2008

I just love the Hannah Swensen mysteries, and the recipes included are so mouth watering when I read them (I cannot say that I have tried one yet though, but I will in the near future).
For this particular murder mystery, I knew who did it early on, but I just could not figure out how or why. I think Joanne Fluke, kept putting clues throughout the book even to the very end, so the reader could try to guess.
One thing I dont understand in this recent book is the romantic relationship between Hannah and Norman and then Hannah and Mike. It seems Mike and Norman are getting a bit too cozy with each other, and acting very passive about knowing they each are dating Hannah. I suppose all of this is to still keep the readers in suspense of who she might finally end up with...if either.
This mystery involved the murder of the drugstore makeup counter lady, and how she was found dead in the house Norman bought from her. Of course, Hannah has to save the day to find the killer because Norman is not allowed to go through any plans in order to make his and Hannah's dream house (Hannah acknowledges that this is so, but makes no reference to her moving in anytime soon) while the investigation is going on.
There is also another tiny mystery thrown in half way through...not another murder, but it certainly made things more interesting.
Joanne Fluke book lovers, cozy mystery fans, and those that love to bake should definitely pick this book for a read.

5 out of 5 stars great light, clean reading and recipes that are easy and tasty!!   May 25, 2008

great light reading. Joanne Fluke does not rely on sex or gore to create a story that is entertaining. she often provides a few interesting factoids throughout too. and the recipes in all the Hannah Swensen novels I've read are my favorites. I use almost no other cookie recipes anymore. you don't need to let the butter soften first, and you don't need to use a mixer. and the results --yum!!!

3 out of 5 stars Average story, great recipes   April 22, 2008

A nice little cozy mystery (number 4 in the series). Nothing amazing or wonderful, just... a nice read. The characters are good, the story line moves along nicely, and the author really gives you a lot of clues to solve it yourself.

It gets high marks for having, hands-down, my favorite cookie recipe to date (Mystery Cookies). Try them, they are amazing!
