4 out of 5 stars Pretty good but not the last word in vacuums   August 8, 2006

Like many households, we have gone through a whole series of bad vacuum cleaners (read, Kenmore), many now accumulating dust (poetic justice) in the basement or relegated to kitty litter vacuum duty. I was tired of throwing away money for essentially disposable vacuums and bought the Miele based on the generally good reputation and positive reviews around the net. My experiences, after about a half year of usage, are mostly good with some mixed results. The unit is indeed compact, relatively quiet (not "whisper" quiet as some of the reviews would have you believe) and it really does pull a strong vacuum. I wanted the powerbrush because I think that is the only way to really clean even area carpets and the Miele performs well in that respect. However, chaning the powerbrush is cumbersome for the same reasons as on my very cheap GE cannister vacuum: the flexible hose has built in wires but there is still an external power cord from the handle down to the powerbrush. Changing the powerbrush for one of the other tools requires disconnecting this cord from the handle and unclipping it from the metal wand. Not handy at all. Only my old Royal got it right, running the electrical wires all the way down to the powered brush, making it much easier to connect/disconnect. I also do not really like the other tools. The one I use the most, the small dusting brush for corners and baseboards, is very small, does not pivot freely, and always seems to have the wrong orientation for what I want to do. This tool does not stow in the cannister so I have to haul it around separately, which is a pain. As for quality, well it is still built from plastic. Already the little notch that supposedly lets you "park" the wand in an upright position has worn out and the wand just flops to the floor when I use it. Finally, get used to buying the expensive bags over the internet for the rest of the vacuum's life. Despite these gripes, I think the Miele is the best of the motley bunch of vacuums I have previously used. It is powerful, light, and fairly quiet. I can't really comment on the filtering capabilities of the Miele as I have no way to measure it but the bag looks like it would do a good job of trapping most large particulates, at least.
