Editorial Reviews:

Product Description
From the Manufacturer Pinzon is proud to present the Penguin Wine Opener--a reliable and easy-to-use wine opener. Simply follow these easy instructions to use the foil cutter, wine opener, and stopper, and you'll be opening bottles in no time. To use the Pinzon Penguin Foil Cutter: * Position the circular foil cutter over the top of the bottle. * Press the sides of the cutter in lightly and twist a couple of times around the bottle. * The foil top neatly removes to expose the cork. To Use the Pinzon Penguin Wine Opener: 1. The sleek Penguin is designed to effortlessly remove a wine bottle cork. 2. Raise the lever and clamp the Penguin down over the neck of the bottle. 3. Grasp the rubberized inserts securely with one hand to hold the bottle steady. 4. Use the other hand to lower and then raise the lever in one smooth motion. (Although you cant see it, the corkscrew enters and pulls out the cork.) 5. With the lever up, lift the Penguin off the bottle. The cork will be inside the Penguin. 6. Lower and raise the lever again, and voila! The cork slides off the corkscrew. Note: The Penguin can be used to open wines bottled with regular corks, but careful use is advised when opening bottles with synthetic corks. To Use the Pinzon Penguin Stopper: * The stopper preserves for days on end the bouquet and flavor of a partially consumed bottle of wine. * Plastic ridges on the stopper collar help provide an airtight seal. To Replace a Cork Screw on the Pinzon Penguin Opener: * Raise the lever and find the largest of three Philips screws in the body of the Penguin. * Unscrew the largest Philips screw to release the cork screw. * Pull out the Penguin screw and insert the replacement into underneath the lever. Then, re-insert and screw in the Philips screw where it was removed from. Cleaning Instructions: * Wipe clean with a damp towel and let air dry. Do not put into dishwasher.

5 out of 5 stars Locked problem fix   January 1, 2009
James Judd (Marietta, GA USA)
I just opened some champagne with the opener and the cork was too wide to go into the chamber. That will lock this opener up! In order to fix it you have to stick your finger into the opener beside the corkscrew to push up a little ring that the cork normally pushes up for you. This 'shifts gears' in the opener and you can then operate the lever like new! I broke mine figuring this out, but hopefully you can save yours :)

3 out of 5 stars Very impressive, but it broke after only 2 months   December 18, 2008
K. Ruedebusch (Seattle, WA USA)
I received this gift set for our wedding in October of this year. I thought it was a gift from heaven until today when it suddenly locked up on me. Suddenly the lever will not raise and I cannot use the corkscrew at all.

I think as long as you don't get a defective one, you will love this item. When you first use it, you will want to show all your friends how easy it is! I am just frustrated that it broke on me so quickly :( I don't know if this is typical or not.

1 out of 5 stars Quality It's Not   December 6, 2008
G. Perkins (Maryland)
After receiving the item I was able to take out the natural cork from a bottle; then it started. The machine would not release the latch so I could not remove the cork. After I pushed and pulled and pleaded to the gods, the latch released and I was finally able to take out the cork and drown the experience in a good bottle of pinot. With little memory of the recent experience, wine has a tendency to do that, I cheerily tried to open another bottle and the same process began-out with the cork in stays the latch. This time gorilla frustration took over and I was able to wrest the cork free while breaking the handle. Interesting to note that the handle center is metal while the outside is rubber. Needless to say I am not recommending this product unless of course you really want frustration in your life.

5 out of 5 stars Nice, easy   November 28, 2008

We tested this for a couple of weeks in comparison to our regular "rabbit" opener, which we've been using for a couple of years. Some people in my family liked this one better, others liked the rabbit better. The major issue seemed to have to do with torque to open it: some folks thought pushing down and pulling up the lever on this one was easier, others thought the rabbit easier. Personally, I thought they were about equal. That being said, I like either of these better than I like most other types of wine openers---they're fast and easy! This one does come with the best foil cutter I've ever run across though.

5 out of 5 stars Stylish, highly efficient opener   November 20, 2008
Beldini (Los Angeles, CA USA)
Sorry Rabbit, you're cute but we love our new Penguin even more.
The Pinzon Penguin gets points for being strikingly stylish right out of the box. But the best thing about it is that it opens bottles easily and quickly and, unlike some other openers, it doesn't take long to get the hang of it. Once you do, it's a great conversation generator at dinner parties and everybody wants to take a turn trying it out. It also doesn't require any costly cartridges and the gift set includes a foil cutter, an airtight stopper and a replacement corkscrew. And at Amazon prices, it makes for an affordable host/hostess gift that's bound to impress.
