Amazon.com Review For a century and a half, since a woman in New York invented the hand-crank freezer, making ice cream has been an American family value. Mom blended the ice cream mixture; Dad filled the maker's wooden tub with ice and rock salt to achieve the below-freezing temperature needed to produce smooth confections; kids clamored to turn the crank; and everyone happily consumed big bowls of ice cream as a reward. This family-bonding activity remains as vibrant today as it was through a century-and-a-half of "progress." With various ice cream, frozen yogurt, and sherbet recipes included, this old-fashioned White Mountain ice cream maker maintains the tradition. Only the use of modern stainless steel for the freezer can and dasher and the electric motor distinguish this rugged maker from the one earlier generations enjoyed. And years from now it will still be used, knitting together a family's history. --Fred Brack

It's good, but... August 27, 2008 Teresa Marie (Charlotte, NC) I have used this ice cream maker three times since I bought it. It makes ice cream of a wonderful consistency. I have experienced 2 concerns. One is it is loud. You have to make ice cream outside or you will not hear anyone talk. The other is the latch to hold the motor in place broke the second time I used it. Since it was past 30 days, I did not return it, but am looking to create my own latch. In the meantime, I jimmied it the last time I used it. Had it not been for this I would have been very satisfied.
good little machine August 6, 2008 Dramapsycho (Los Angeles County, California) We have used this ice cream maker three times so far and each time it has consistently produced high quality ice cream. It is fast, does not require the pre-freezing of a gel-center, and is good right out of the bucket or after being in the freezer a few days. It is a bit loud, but what would you expect from a metal can being rotated in a bed of salted ice? Good news is that it only takes about 15-20 minutes for it to finish.
Very Happy customer July 10, 2008 A. Molyneux (Iowa) I am very happy and pleased with the purchase this White Mountain Ice Cream freezer. My family has a long history of using White Mountain freezers. I needed a new ice cream freezer since we wore a hole in our old White Mountain freezer - (at least 30 years old). It was much cheaper than our local stores and was shipped to me in a very timely manner. I did pay a little extra to have it here for a birthday party, and it was worth every penny. Great product- Great service & Great Ice Cream!! Thanks!
Is anything better than homemade ice cream? June 26, 2008 Joshua S. Alongi (Santa Monica, CA) 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
We're having a great time with this product. It's a bit like a science lab to experiment with recipes, which is fun. The product works quite well, and I have not seen any wear yet like some reviews mention, but I have only had it for a short while. Electric is definitely the way to go vs hand crank. This was the best price we found for it as well.
White Mountain Ice Cream Freezer June 16, 2008 naql 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
I don't know about the "Rival" version, but the original White Mountain Ice Cream freezer is the best there is. (Normally I associate "Rival" with cheap foreign made crap.) My family has had one in use for several decades and it still makes great ice cream. Of course, you *do* need to know how to operate an ice cream freezer... you can't blame "salty ice cream" on the ice cream freezer, that's the result of not knowing how to make ice cream. You need to make sure the drain hole isn't plugged up. And, yes, there are replacement parts available on the internet for this and, indeed, for everything else under the sun.
