4 out of 5 stars Whisperkool unit has worked great   November 29, 2008
Randy Wear (chicago)
I have now had a Whisperkool for 3 years. it has worked flawlessly, other than a few drips which could be due to a) I don't have the drip tube installed and b) I don't have a professional, totally moisture shielded room.

In anywhere around the price range, this is the one to buy. I know many other people with them - similar experience. and a friend who has a professional wine cellar business says Whisperkool is the best to buy for an in-wall install. You can do better with a split system, but many of us don't have that option or budget.

1 out of 5 stars Another Miserable WhisperKool experience   November 15, 2007

I will echo everything said here. These cooling units are junk. I am on number three--not by choice, they keep dying and the only real option I have had so far is to "trade it in" for a (supposedly) refurbished unit which I am confident will die again in a year or two. This is classic designed obsolescence--the cooling unit is welded together, meaning that there is no way to repair individual components. This means there is no way to repair them, you're trapped into dealing with them again and sending another check for $6-700 bucks.

I have three neighbors with cellars. Between the four of us, we have had 6 or 7 whisperkools die over the last five years. They are PREDICTABLY flawed.

I am stuck (and would love someone to offer an alternative). I just had a custom HVAC installer in to look at putting in a true commercial grade split unit at $5K-$10K total cost. Problem is, I did not realize, that the air handler unit measures 40" x 40" x 40", and there was no place to put it in my finished basement. I'll have to wait for our upcoming kitchen redo to pull cabinetry out and put that in.

In the meantime, I am contemplating the short term desperation maneuver of buying what I suspect is an even LESS reliable but ultra cheap "Grand Cru" cooler from Wine Enthusiast. The reviews I've seen suggest it lasts about a year, at a cost of around $700. I figure with a year warranty, and an extra year from buying it with an AMEX card, I can hold out long enough to get the split unit installed.

Anyone have any better ideas?

1 out of 5 stars Vinotheque/WhisperKool - - a simply awful company   July 22, 2006

My new 4200 WhisperKool by Vinotheque ran just fine. For 2 weeks. Then the humidity rose, the drain didn't work, and much water damage followed. An F or quality control. It's a sealed box too, so servicing requires a Houdini, even for something as ridiculously simple as a blocked drain hose, factory direct.

Vinotheque phone service is uninformed and insulting. There apparently is no national service network so the only option with a defective new unit is to place yourself into a robotic and haughty assistant's hands, who cross examines with the attitude that everything wrong with the product must be your doing, then accomodate a demand for $50 for shipment of a "loaner", then when you get it uninstall the new unit, replace it with the loaner (all at your cost, folks) ship Vinotheque your defective new unit, wait for their verdict, then go through the cycle again. They'll tell you how much more you owe. The water damage. Well, too bad, that's your problem too.

In sum, it's as stupid and insensitive as it gets. I was fortunate to receive pro bono, competent assistance specially arranged by the retail firm from which I purchased the unit and the problem was corrected on site (as the Vinotheque henchlady attacked by email - - my warranty thusly would be invalidated). Learn from this lesson and beware - - WhisperKool's densely fine print is a "gotcha"; the warranty is with Vinotheque upon shipment to you. You definitely don't want to go there.

This appalling company is the worst with which I have ever dealt. Avoid the trap. Chill out some another way.

1 out of 5 stars Whisperkool a ripoff   June 2, 2006

Whisperkool products are poorly made and in a short period breakdown. The manufacturer does not support the product and will not even return calls. Stay away from this product. A waste of money.

3 out of 5 stars Gets the job done, not sure if there is anything better   February 7, 2005

As I built my 1000 bottle cellar in 2002, I did a lot of research on cooling units such as Whisperkool. Most of the mid-$1000 units are basically a box with a small compressor, coils and fans. I chose the Whisperkool 4200 for my cellar based on recommendations from a wine cellar designer in San Francisco.
I installed my 4200 in the summer of 2002 and the unit ran when needed (mainly during the summer and fall) until December 2004 when the temperature control unit failed. I am guessing that the vibration of the compressor probably caused a solder joint to loosen.
I've heard of problems with Breezaire and the others. The only units I haven't heard friends complain about are the $5000 professional split-handler systems, but those are too much for my wallet.
