Product Description
Rancilio Silvia Espresso MachineThe Legend of a Celebrated Home Espresso MachineThe Rancilio Silvia is possibly the most celebrated semi professional espresso machine of all time. The Rancilio Silvia espresso machine offers excellent dependable service and allows its users (with proper technique, practice & training) to produce the highest quality espresso beverages at the home or office.Since 1927 the Rancilio company has been known and appreciated around the world for its quality craftsmanship and superior espresso machines and grinders. The Rancilio Silvia is no exception and is our absolute favorite espresso machine value in the under $1000 category. The Rancilio Silvia espresso machine features an iron support frame and it's body and control panels are stainless steel with a satin finish.Espresso Machine Accessories Include: 1 filter holder, 1-cup filter, 2-cup filter, measuring spoon, coffee press. The Rancilio Silvia is one of the most popular home espresso machines ever and the reasons for this are simple. This espresso machine is very reliable and built to last for years. One might even say that this is an espresso machine/maker with a cult following. A quick search "Google" on the internet for 'Rancilio Silvia' and will reveal the plethura of results. The chrome plated commercial size group excepts a full size commercial portafilter and/or bottomless portafilter. For the best results we reccomend the use of a 14 Gram Double La Marzocco espresso portafilter basket part number MZ.107. This has been proven by many to be the perfect basket for use in a Silvia. In fact at your option you can order thte Silvia from espresso parts with a commercial portafilter and Marzocco basket for only 30.00 more, a great deal. The 12 oz. boiler is one of the largest in its class. Match this with Silvia's three way solenoid valve and you are as close to a commercial machine as you can get in this price range. 5 out of 5 stars exellent!   August 21, 2008

I just got my new machine from the box. It has a white protective coating that may be scratched, giving the appearance of it being used. Upon contacting the good people from "wholelattelove", they helpfully instructed me on how to remove such plastic linning. The machine looks very good. Solid stainless steel.
Best part, COFFEE FROM HEAVEN.

5 out of 5 stars Great machine for the money   July 10, 2008

I had a cheaper Krups machine since 1989 and upgraded to Miss Silvia last year - fantastic. Now I can have delicious cappucino whenever I want (frothing was always a problem with the Krups). Some advice from a long-time (almost 20 years now!) espresso brewer: First, you don't need to buy a grinder, BUT you can't buy espresso at the grocer or ANY espresso made in America. I buy Lavazza espresso in bricks and it's great (and no $300 grinder). You must buy a European package (look for Italian) and not one design for America (it will be a coarser drip grind). But once you do, you'll get great espresso every time. Second, frothing is easy with Miss Silvia - you just have to get the tip to the perfect depth. Do this by starting with the tip on the bottom and SLOWLY pulling the cup/pitcher down to bring the tip toward the surface. You will notice a change in SOUND as you do, and a change in CIRCULATION of the milk. After a few tries, you'll be a pro. Lastly, quit worrying about pulling the perfect, or most beautiful shot. It's COFFEE! Froth your milk in your cup, then pull the shot in directly (don't waste any coffee or froth!) into the cup and it's perfect every time. And I just fill the cup - none of this 2oz nonsense. And guess what? It still tastes like Italia! One final note on Miss Silvia, be sure to start the frothing in an empty pitcher (lots of H20 in the beginning) and turn the steam off and then turn the wand on (into that same empty pitcher) after the froth but before you pull the shot. This lets excess steam out. Without doing that, the shot tends to splash and make a mess.

3 out of 5 stars Water water everywhere and not a shot to drink   June 26, 2008

Wondering if this is the machine for you? Try the following test:
(1) Go to your favorite coffee shop and purchase a bag of the freshest most expensive beans money can buy
(2) Grind the beans
(3) Pour the grounds down the toilet and flush
(4) Repeat steps 1-3 for six months

If you're still interested after going through this process then you're definitely ready for the Silvia. This is a machine for people who like the idea of making espresso more than they like actually drinking espresso. Its very inconsistent and even if you perfect the technique you'll have difficulty repeating the process. Some tips that will help you if you decide to buy one. Throw out the plastic tamper that comes with the machine and buy a good quality one. Throw out the portafilter that comes with the machine and buy a "naked" or bottomless portafilter. Buy fresh roasted beans - not vacuum sealed beans from the grocery store - go to your coffee shop and ask them when their "retail beans" were roasted - if they don't know, don't buy them. Talk to your local barrista and ask for advice. Most important, go to a good coffee shop and order single/double shot espressos (not latte's or cap's) - learn what a good shot tastes like.

4 out of 5 stars If you are a serious espresso fan   June 16, 2008

I recently purchased the Rancilio and initially was very disappointed with the frothing part. By accident, I watched the video from Rancilio on how they froth the milk. It was very different from how I was previouly frothing. Upon trying their method, I found the Rancilio an excellent machine. If you are considering buying this machine, make sure you watch the various videos and read the tip sheet you can find on their website. Now that I have a frothing thermometer and have watched the videos, I can say I am very satisfied with this machine. Time will tell if the heating unit will last. I had a Gaggio Classic and the heating unit was forever having problems.

The Silvia is a well-built, easy to use machine that makes great espresso. Yes, $600 is a lot to spend on an espresso machine, but you need to spend at least this much to get good espresso and a machine that will last. There are some prettier machines out there, but beauty is only skin deep. Silvia is built like a tank covered in stainless steel. She's durable and easy to clean. To get up and running you'll need a frothing pitcher and a new tamper (the one that comes with Silvia is plastic). You'll also need a good burr grinder.
