4 out of 5 stars How much I enjoy my little crockpot   February 29, 2008

We really enjoy our 1 1/2 quart crock pot. It is just perfect for dipping sauces and meals for 2 people.

3 out of 5 stars Serves its purpose   November 7, 2007

Great item! Serves it's purpose! Lack of temperature control. The manual indicates it heats on the equivalent as the "low" setting on a larger crockpot. I think it to be a little warmer than "low".

    4 out of 5 stars Rival Crock-Pot   July 7, 2007

This crockpot is just the right size for my spouse and I. What I didn't like about it was that it has no on/off switch, and it cooks a little too hot. It says on the package that it cooks on the same low setting as the bigger ones, but I found that it was higher than that. My food did turn out OK, but it's a good thing I was home to check on it, or it would have burned!

4 out of 5 stars Good size, occasional hot spot (updated 6/07)   January 15, 2007

June 2007 update to my original review: I still have the same pros/cons for this product. I've used it many times since I wrote that review and the hot spot problem has not changed. I've found some work-arounds, though; for example, when I make oatmeal overnight, I put the crock pot on a timer (the kind you use to set your lamps to turn on/off while you're on vacation) and have the oatmeal start cooking at about 1 AM and I also added extra water to the crock for the oatmeal. So after months of use, I still feel the same way about this item and have found it useful enough that I'm willing to experiment with work-arounds instead of just getting rid of it.

    Original review:
I ordered this crock pot to replace an older version that didn't have a removable crock.

    What I like about it:
    - Crock is removable and dishwasher safe.
    - Size is perfect for 2-person meals.
    - Doesn't take up much storage space.
    - Glass lid allows you to see the contents.

    My concerns:
    - Seems to have a hot-spot on one side but it's only an issue if I leave the dish cooking longer than I should (such as if I get home from work really late.)
    - The lid doesn't look like it fits well; however, I don't think I'm losing any heat. So it might just be an aesthetic issue.

I have used this crock pot 6 times in the past month and am very happy with it. So far the "hot-spot" issue has affected two meals and I was able to just cut off the overcooked part. But that's the reason I gave this 4 stars instead of 5.

A general warning to anyone who is not familiar with crock pot cooking: the days of putting a dish in the crock pot before you leave for work and it being perfectly done when you return home are over, in my opinion. The new slow cookers/crock pots cook *much* faster and hotter than those our mothers owned in the 70's. My large, 5-quart Rival crock pot actually boils when I turn it on high! I suggest you experiment with yours on a weekend before you go off and leave it cooking unattended while you are at work for 9 or 10 hours. I find that if a crock pot recipe calls for cooking on low for 9 hours, it only takes 6 hours in my small or large crock pots.

If you enjoy good oatmeal try the oatmeal recipe in the instruction manual. I ate the instant/microwave oatmeal for years but have now become hooked on the "real" oatmeal we make overnight in the crock pot.

5 out of 5 stars perfect for small whole-grain meals ready when you need them   October 9, 2006

My husband gets up by 5 am and I... well, I don't! :)

I bought this unit to make hot cereal so I could offer my husband a hot breakfast without having to (painfully) alter my own sleep schedule.

This is a great size for our family of three. I fill it with water and whole grains around 9 pm. My husband takes his breakfast at 5 am and unplugs the unit. When my son and I get up around 6 or 7 am, the cereal has cooled to a perfect temperature to eat right away without exceeding the "maximum 2 hours at room temperature" timeframe for food safety.

I want to eat healthy, but I'm not an accomplished cook. This 1 1/2 qt crockpot, together with the 2 qt model I use for dinner, allows me to cook whole grains and other "real" foods without needing any great skill or time to stand by the stove. I get to play with my son while still offering him old-fashioned home cooked meals.
