Do NOT buy this blender February 10, 2010 M. Skala I have had this blender for about 4 years. Use it about a handful of times a year. Nothing hard, just milkshakes and smoothies. Put the pitcher on the other day to make a milkshake for my husband and pushed on. Black pieces flew and it would not work. The black coupler broke. Contacted customer service to tell me this is a "service part" and that I had to send it in to Ohio (closest repair place to me)to have them fix it. Of course I had to pay for everything. I was always under the impression KitchenAid stood behind there products. Guess not. They call this a service part because they know it will break and people will have to pay to fix it. The repair is half the cost of a new blender. I use to be a big KitchenAid fan for all my small appliances, no longer. I will never buy another one. Don't waste your money on this one. Buy a blender that uses metal pieces instead of rubber/plastic ones.
Rubber coupler is the downfall June 6, 2009 jsa (LA) I've owned this blender for many years. The glass jar broke once (while in use) & I replaced it. Then I had it refurbished in 2003. From 2003 to 2009 it worked OK. Recently it became difficult to crush more than 4 ice cubes at once, and the rubber coupler attached to the power base came off completely. Part of the coupler actually adhered to under side of the blade assembly. Although I got many years out of this blender, it's had problems along the way and I wouldn't purchase another one.
my experience seems to be 180 degrees from other revews June 6, 2009 Prof. Crayzee (Ithaca, NY) Got this at an outlet mall at deep discount, so not expecting miracles. We use it 1-2 times per weeks to crush ice for smoothies and other drinks. Have had for appx 2 years. Have not noticed any de-coupling of the blades to the connector. No rubber seals failing. Everything works very well.
Our only problem was that we lost the little clear cap that goes over the large lid (the one you can take off while it is blending to add ingredients). Probably because the thing is clear.
I went to the kitchenaid website to ask about ordering a replacement, and they simply asked for my address and sent a new one. No questions asked. No proof of purchase. No shipping costs. I was very surprised. Maybe their customer service has turned around? I have not received the part yet (this was just 1 day ago) so I will update this thread if and when it arrives.
A blender that can't make a smoothie? July 27, 2008 Brase This blender cannot make a smoothie containing ice. An air pocket forms every single time. One spends a lot of time opening it and trying to push down the contents so the blade will make contact, which it then does for about 2 seconds. It is practically useless, and a big disappointment to find the KitchenAid name on such a poorly engineered appliance.
Poor design and bad reliability July 9, 2008 E. J Tastad (Marion, IA United States) Pros:
Feels high quality
Easy to clean controls
Glass beaker
Cons:
Poor design doesn't deal with ice well
Coupling is unreliable and needs regular replacing (every 30 uses or so).
Who should buy this blender? Avoid this blender as it is a poor design. I have owned this blender for 8 years and have always been frustrated with it. I have finally decided to trash it after endless frustration and get something cheap to replace it (even if it won't feel as nice).
Update: After looking around, other blenders have similar frustrations. Since the coupling is only a 4 or $5 part I guess I will just put up with changing it regularly. One note, if you grind ice or frozen fruit in here be sure to have enough liquid with the ice or it won't grind.
Update 2: Now that I got the new couplers, I found why the other had failed. The blade assembly froze (blades no longer turn). To replace in the older blender with the screw on lid you have to replace the entire jar. If you have the push on lid the blades can be purchased separately. Now I have 3 extra couplers and a piece of junk.
