Amazon.com Review For a century and a half, since a woman in New York invented the hand-crank freezer, making ice cream has been an American family value. Mom blended the ice cream mixture; Dad filled the maker's wooden tub with ice and rock salt to achieve the below-freezing temperature needed to produce smooth confections; kids clamored to turn the crank; and everyone happily consumed big bowls of ice cream as a reward. This family-bonding activity remains as vibrant today as it was through a century-and-a-half of "progress." With various ice cream, frozen yogurt, and sherbet recipes included, this old-fashioned White Mountain ice cream maker maintains the tradition. Only the use of modern stainless steel for the freezer can and dasher distinguishes this rugged maker from the one earlier generations enjoyed. And years from now it will still be used, knitting together a family's history. --Fred Brack

Hand cranked Ice Cream October 16, 2008 Tn Andy (Tennessee) This is a well made churn. The difference in White Mtn and other brands is the "double action" of the gear crank. As you turn the handle, the churn turns in one direction and the inside dasher turns in the other direction, making ice MUCH faster than a single action gear. Only takes about 15 minutes to crank a churn full. Secret family recipe for "melt in your mouth" peach or strawberry ice cream: 1-2 quarts of fruit....mashed 1 package of fruit ( to match fruit ) jello....mix as per jello directions, but pour in the churn immediately after mixing...don't cool. 1 quart of heavy or whipping cream Fill the rest of the 6 qt churn with whole milk to within 4" of top. Put churn in tub, add ice, 2 cups salt, and enough water so it starts to come out the overflow hole....crank until hard to crank, ( about 15 minutes of steady cranking ) and you've got a REAL treat ! Guess the secret is out....ahahahahaaa
wonderful product October 12, 2008 David R. Beene (San Antonio, TX) Good product great price. Over mixing, (over 25 minutes) results in agitator rubbing the cannister. When not overmixed no shavings in icecream.
White Mountain Hand-Operated Ice Cream Maker- 6 qt. October 6, 2008 Louis C. Kovacs (White Plains, MD) A great old time, hand-cranked ice cream freezer/maker that will last a lifetime. We have both the 6 qt. (for small gatherings), and the 20 qt., (5 gallons! for block parties, and sadly, no longer available), for over 20 years and they're both still going strong. Made to last with very robust, pretty well galvanized metal components, and very good joinery of the wooden bucket. Our family's traditional wedding present -- there's nothing like ice cream you make yourself!
White Mountain Ice Cream Maker September 5, 2008 K. D. Gibson (Knoxville, TN) This product has been everything I wanted in an ice cream maker. The handcrank assembly is very well made with metal internal parts instead of plastic. The bucket is very sturdy and solidly assembled. Very easy to use. We have used this product three times: once for a childrens festival at our church and twice for family outings and have been pleased with every result. I do not think you can go wrong with this freezer. We are very happy with ours.
Customer service is not dead August 21, 2008 Gary R. Spencer (MidTN, USA) Searched, found, ordered, received, all quickly and efficiently as expected. Opened the box and discovered that one lobe on the dasher was broken. The broken part was not in the box, indicating that the error occurred at the manufacturer. Big problem? Not at all. Went online to Amazon, a replacement was on the way shortly. All labels were enclosed for the return and everything was detailed by emails advising of every step of the process. Painless and logical. Oh, the freezer, just the best, no less.
