5 out of 5 stars Great product for the holidays!   November 29, 2008
A. Bloss (Cato, NY United States)
I purchased this Nesco roaster to use for the Thanksgiving holiday to free up valuable oven space. Why spend close to $300 for a top of the line roasting pan and take up all your oven space? After adding the usual broth and veggies to the bottom of the pan and placing the 17 pound turkey on top, in the end we had the moistest turkey we have ever had! The only thing I can think of that might be turnoff is the turkey does not brown in this roaster without some extra help on the skin. But if you can live with that, you will have one of the moistest turkeys you have ever had.

I did extend the "burn off" period of the roaster when I first got it to 8 hours at max temp outside in the garage. It was very stinky that day - but on Thanksgiving the only thing we smelled in the house was yummy turkey. And the stainless steel look matches perfectly with all our other appliances. This was a good investment!

5 out of 5 stars Better than the 1941 version!   November 27, 2008
annonemoose
My parents received a roaster in 1941 as a wedding gift. All my warm holiday memories featured the traditional turkey and dressing in the roaster. Needless to say it's 2008 and the old roaster is tiring just a bit. The enamel cookwell is fissuring in 2 spots and the rack has had to be welded.

So this year I splurged and purchased this roaster with the stainless steel cookwell just in time for Thanksgiving!

The only negative is the burn in! Now I wasn't around in 1941 when my parents received theirs but I don't remember my mom complaining about a burn in in later years. Anyway I took the roaster OUTSIDE (that's crucial), removed the cookwell, paperwork etc..... and turned it on. 1 hour later the smell was horrific, 2 more hours no change, 8 hours and the smell was still BAD, VERY BAD!!

I turned the roaster off after the 8 hour burn in and since it still stank I did another 8 hour burn the next day and by the end of 16 hours of total burn time the 'stench' had died down. The strength of the stench worried me. The last thing I wanted to do was ruin the Thanksgiving 20 pounder so I plopped a 5 pound frying chicken in the roaster, turned the roaster to 350 and left it cook for 2 hours.

At first I was worried because there was still a little residual smell at the start of the cook but within a few minutes all you could smell was the heavenly roasting bird. 2 hours later the chicken was falling off the bone tender. The entire bird simply slide off the bone as I attempted to lift it gingerly out of the roaster.

The spices had deeply penetrated and my husband and I stood at the roaster and feasted upon the fallen chicken pieces left in the roaster. It was the best roast chicken we had had in recent memory.

Clean up, oh the dreaded clean up, as the old roaster aged cleaning got more and more difficult and it was a much dreaded and hated task. I purchased the stainless cookwell to hopefully facilitate cleanup and now began clean up with much trepidation. Was I pleasantly suprised. After washing out all the organic bits I simply sprayed with a little oven cleaner put the roaster lid on and snickered knowing my husband would end up being stuck with the cleaning next morning. Boy was the joke on me! The next morning ALL the inside was clean and after a quick sponging with some dishwashing liquid the stainless steel cookwell was clean!

So for the first time in the past 20 years that I've been responsible for roasting the bird I am NOT dreading the clean up portion of the program and for me THAT alone is worth 5 stars!
Thank you Nesco no more dreading Thanksgiving

4 out of 5 stars Nesco Roaster Oven - As Promised   February 8, 2008
Happy in Colorado (Denver, CO USA)
I bought this 18-Quart Roaster Oven after the holidays. I only wish I would have purchased it BEFORE the holidays. I cooked a prime rib roast for a small family gathering after the holidays. It turned out PERFECT. The description and promises made were definitely delivered. If you are looking for a Roaster Oven to augment your own range, this is the one for you.

4 out of 5 stars Good with some Flaws   January 18, 2008
CH (Flint, MI)
Nesco 18-qt. Stainless Steel Roaster with Stainless Steel Cookwell

We gave the roaster a two hour pre-heat outside as recommended which allowed the smoke from the roaster to be outside. We also then gave the roaster a one hour pre-heat inside only because it was rather cold outside and we didn't think it was able to reach full temperature. The unit didn't smoke, but still did have a smell which slowly dissipated.

The Nesco roaster worked perfectly. Some flaws: difficult to clean - I'd recommend using an oil spray to coat the pan, and when washing the cookwell it seemed to dent pretty easily.

5 out of 5 stars Nesco 18 Qt Roaster   December 14, 2007
CooksAlot (Austin, TX USA)
Took the advice of other purchasers and let this unit "bake off" the terrible element smell....cooked on high for about 8 hrs....slight smell when used 1st time, but glad I had followed others recommendation. So far this is a wonderful unit, kept my potatoes, stuffing and vegetable nice and hot using the buffet kit...and the unit as a steam table (water in the insert pan)....have yet to actually roast in it, but I mainly like it and wanted it for serving, as is much nicer & keeps food perfectly hot and use the warming tray for other items.
Highly recommend this product to others....
